Windows Updates

Hi everyone,

We are going to be changing the process of doing monthly Windows updates. (Mac users can stop reading here.) Nick will no longer go around the office to make sure your updates are installed. He will instead send out an email every month alerting everyone that there are updates available and that you can install them yourself. Included below are instructions on how to do this. For anyone that has watched the process it’s just a few mouse clicks.

He will set a deadline for these updates to be installed - this will be 1 week from the sending of the initial alert email. Once the deadline is reached your computer will force an install and restart. For this reason the deadline will be set for a Saturday or Sunday. If you did not complete the install by that time, when you next log onto your computer and in turn your computer checks for Windows updates, you will get a warning telling you that your machine will force a restart in about 15 minutes. You have 15 minutes to save your work because your machine will restart (like it or not) to finish installing updates. The only way to stop the machine from restarting after the 15 minute warning is to restart it preemptively or unplug it.

Instructions to take control of the update and do it yourself:

1: Click on the Start menu icon in the bottom left corner of your taskbar

2: Click on the Settings icon (It looks like a little gear)

3: In the window that opens click on “Update & Security”

4: Click the “Check for Updates” button to check for updates. Or you might have a list of updates already showing and click on the “Install” button or “Restart” button, whichever is displayed.

For those that would like some help doing this just contact Nick, Jonathan or me and anyone of us can walk you through the steps.

Note - Remote users must connect to the VPN to install Windows updates

Thank You,

Nick and Warren
